Abstract

Hxaro is a formalized gift‐giving custom found among some Bushman or San groups in the northern Kalahari. The initial “h” is not pronounced but is there simply to indicate, for English‐speakers lacking a glottal fricative, that the x is to be pronounced. In some dialects it is known as //'ãe, which is the relevant verb. It is also, and more correctly, written as xaro.
