Abstract

Highlights:
• This review aims to give an overview of the simultaneous effect of hypoxia on both the host and invading pathogens.
• Particular focus is given to the novel concept of hypoxic reprogramming of the innate and adaptive immune response.
• Finally, it includes a brief description of the effect of low oxygen availability on pathogenicity with an emphasis on the Pseudomonas species.
