Discusses the extent to which the requirement of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 that a transsexual person obtain a diagnosis of gender dysphoria before being eligible for a gender recognition certificate, legally recognising their reassigned gender, retains the medicalised approach that has in the past subjected transsexual people to misunderstanding and injustice. Considers how it perpetuates the heteronormative binary notion of gender by establishing a dichotomy between a transsexual person's mind and body.
