Unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
(OFDM) schemes have a reduced spectral efficiency (SE) when
compared with direct current (DC)-biased optical OFDM (DCOOFDM).
The concept of superposition modulation was proposed
as a solution to the SE loss for unipolar orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing (U-OFDM) and pulse-amplitude-modulated
discrete multitone modulation (PAM-DMT). In this paper, a
power and spectrally efficient enhanced asymmetrically clipped
optical OFDM (eACO-OFDM) scheme is proposed using superposition
modulation. The bit error rate (BER) performance of
the proposed scheme is derived and matched to the Monte Carlo
simulation results. The performance of the superposition OFDMbased
modulation schemes is compared and presented for both
additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and dispersive visible
light communications (VLC) channels.
