Abstract

This keynote relates to the Galpin Society Conference on Collectors and Collecting. As the programme includes fascinating papers relating to individual collectors and collections, I decided to offer an overview in order to try to build a context and overarching structure into which the various detailed presentations fit. So my main themes are:
• Collecting: why do it?
• What is a Collection?
• History of Collecting and Collectors
• Formalisation of Collections
• Is there a future for Collections?
• The Lives of Objects
• Musical Instrument Collecting Today
