The article lists a number of rituals relating to fishermen's rituals where they avoid certain subjects and words when preparing for fishing and when they are out on the open sea. The local traditions from Smøla is given a wider perspective in a North Atlantic setting and then attempts are maid at explaining the rituals from social and psychological needs.
