This chapter documents the remarkable expansion and growth in the study of musical identities since the publication of our book Musical identities (MacDonald, Hargreaves and Miell, 2002). We start by summarizing the three main features of current psychological approaches to this topic, namely the different definitions which have been proposed: various views of the development of musical identities: and the question of individual differences in musical identity. Each of the four sections of the chapter which follow reviews one of the four main contexts in which musical identities have been investigated, namely in music and musical institutions; in specific geographical communities; in education; and in the area of health and well-being. The final section of the chapter is a brief outline of the structure and contents of the Handbook as a whole.
