Abstract

The name Laithlind and similar features in Irish sources in the 9th century, and appears to be the name of a location from which the king of the Vikings originates. The claim in this chapter is that this sovereignty is likely to be a strong kingdom in pre-unified Norway. After a discussion about the semantic content of the early name forms and a possible motivation for the name, it is suggested that the polity in question is located in SW Norway, centered around Avaldsnes.
