Abstract

A key skill of the sports coach is to deliver effective training sessions to develop the performer and/or team and enhance competition, and the monitoring of athletes is vital in this process. Traditionally sports coaches have little formal education or training in this area. Much appears to be learned through trial and error and experience; however, the sports coaches’ lack of education or expertise in this area can lead to both short-and long-term issues that can be detrimental to performance or more seriously, dangerous to the health and well-being of the athletes.
